If you’re a tekkie, you cannot visit the family without having someone asking you to check their computer. The last time I was asked to check someone’s computer it was a friends laptop. It was so infected it wasn’t able to boot (rogue AV). It was still infected even after a $49.95 payment (yes, he clicked and paid). I didn’t have time to play with that and we went with a full re-install from image. Today, with the recent release of the FixMeStick, it would be so different!
The FixMeStick is a fantastic product that can save your machine (and a lot of time/stress). A simple but powerful self-booting USB key that includes 3 well known AV engines; Kaspersky (the ones who found the recent Flame malware), Sophos and Vipre (GFI). Boot, update, scan and relax. I had the chance to play with the FixMestick for few weeks and I was very impressed, really. The USB key, when plugged into the USB port, booted on ALL machines (even old hardware I wasn’t able to boot anything on). By booting on its own OS, it can remove any infection without installing anything on the computer, leaving no trace when done. Even on an AV protected machine, the FixMeStick found viruses that my actual AV wasn’t able to detect. The key detects the network settings, update itself, scans and cleans your computer while you’re free to do something else (or watch the scanning like most of us will do!)
Have a look, it worth it!
