MSiCS has, so far, been dealing with your hardware (dust & workstation mechanics). Let’s take a look at programming (food).
Running too many commands
Too many people eat lunch (& even breakfast & supper) at their desks. Multi-tasking may be wonderful for some things but not for your body: http://www.ajcn.org/content/93/2/308.short. If you’re feeding it when it thinks it’s supposed to be doing other things, you’ll find it’s inefficient and will slow you down. This defeats the purpose of ‘saving time’ & you’re back to square 1. In short try not to eat at your workstation.
Muncha buncha!
That being said, everyone snacks at their desk. It’s inevitable, so make sure they’re healthy:
- Dark Chocolate (it’s chocolate!)

There are many healthy nuts and seeds. Try different varieties to find out what you really like & then mix them with other things to keep you from over-indulging BUT, see Rule 3 below.
http://www.health.harvard.edu/newsweek/Nuts_and_your_health_Cracking_old_myths.htm - Unsalted or lightly salted popcorn
Be careful with popcorn your office mates may accuse you of making them hungry with that delicious aroma. Also, most packaged microwave popcorn is full of additives & a ton of salt. - Trail mix
CHECK the salt & sugar content BEFORE you buy any variety. - Fruit fresh or dried
When possible try for local for fresh fruit but it can be messy so see Rule 3 below - Juice / Milk / Mineral water / Herbal tea / Tea / even coffee
please try & cut down on the sodas even diet sodas. The research is out there people. - WATER!!
Drinking lots of water will
a) Fill you up so you won’t eat as much
b) Ensure that you will be getting up from your workstation more frequently.
3 RULES FOR SNACKING AT YOUR DESK
Keep your portions small.
What ever you’re snacking on; keep the bulk of it in the kitchen, your locker or, better yet, at home & only ever have enough for your day in your desk. A small container is plenty.
Keep it to yourself.
Disturbing your coworkers with powerful aromas or loud ‘crunchings & munchings’ is NOT cool. If in doubt check with your Manager/Director BEFORE you start snacking away.
Keep it clean.
NO SHELLED NUTS OR SEEDS EVER! NO COTTON CANDY, in fact nothing super sticky. You will regret it. Cleaning up the mess will take up the time that you should have ‘saved’ by snacking at your desk in the 1st place. Small bowls & side plates, once empty should go to the dishwasher. If you don’t clean it up your equipment will suffer & so will your work.
BON APP TIT!
