In the past day or two I have deleted at least 20 emails that wished me Happy Holidays, All the Best of the Season, Best Wishes for the New Year, etc., etc., etc. a veritable snowstorm of spam. Yes folks these holiday greetings are spam!
I’ve gotten holiday emails from companies I have never done business with, have stopped doing business with, and some companies whose websites I might have visited once 2 years ago! I even got several email greetings that contained viruses. To make matters worse you can’t even unsubscribe!!
Sending out personalized email holiday greetings to well-known clients, associates or suppliers is one thing but mass sending does not endear you to anyone. In fact it often has the opposite effect and will turn a potential client into someone who is simply annoyed. Even sending holiday wishes to all one’s subscribers is questionable. If you want to put a greeting on your web page or in your blog / newsletter, that might be a better way to go.
And, when you do send greetings, if you feel you must send images of snowflakes or candy canes, keep the number of pictures to a minimum (1 is a good number!) and keep the size small. Many people will be reading your emails on their phones and 4 pictures of several megs each is not an ideal situation.
Running through the town yelling Merry Christmas like Jimmy Stewart in It’s A Wonderful Life is ok but please prevent your heartfelt email holiday greetings from turning into unwanted spam.
