Yet again, a Hollywood stars Gmail account has been hacked, exposing Vanessa Hudgens private pictures on the Net. This follows similar public airings of Ali Larter, Busy Phillips, Scarlett Johansson, Miley Cyrus, Emma Caulfield, Addison Timlin, Renee Olstead and …you?
Do you really think that pictures stored in the cloud are safe and secure, or do you secretly want them to be exposed? My own opinion is that – cloud or not – once something is on the Net its basically hidden treasure just waiting to be discovered (and whats on the Net STAYS on the Net – forever). There are pirates who will try to steal your laptop or pillage your WiFi network, but they have to be close by to do that. But the cloud? Pirates can attack it from anywhere.
A lot of people keep important files in their Inbox. It’s easy to do, accessible from anywhere in the world and probably the most insecure way to store your stuff.
I can’t give you a 100% full-proof trick to secure all your files, but I can certainly tell you that the best protection is still the old-fashioned method: compress the contents with a password. A good password will take years to hack. For example, a 10-character password can take up to 14,150 years and 3 months to crack. Once compressed (using Zip or RAR), you can archive files in the cloud or your Inbox so you can access them anytime and anywhere (oh yeah, as long as you’re not using an infected machine ).
If you really don’t want to share your private stuff, don’t dangle it in public. Unless, of course, you actually want the free worldwide exposure!
So, where do you keep your stuff?
